A few sunny days allowed crews to make progress on Phase II of the Pedestrian Mall Improvements Project last week.

The walkways on the south side of College Street, in front of Formosa and Bread Garden Market, were finished. Crews will then move the fencing to the other side, setting up in front of the Iowa City Public Library.

The Library’s west side entrance - the entrance that faces towards the playground - will be closed for a couple of months while planters, paving, lighting and underground utilities are removed and replaced.  The Library will remain open during this process, as will its South Linn Street entrance.

On the west side of College Street, crews finished the pavement replacement in front of The Union Bar and part of Revival, with plans to complete work past Graze by Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

All statues located on College Street will be removed during the renovation process and placed in storage until the project is complete. This includes the statue of the father tying his son’s shoelace, “The Ties That Binds,” which was located near the playground, and the bronze jazz trio “Jazz,” located on the west side of the Ped Mall.

The next Ped Mall Renovation Project meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 31, in Room D of the Iowa City Public Library.
