Crews will put the finishing touches on Phase I of the Ped Mall Improvements Project and start Phase II this week.

At Black Hawk Mini Park, brick pavers were installed and electrical work was done. The Story Wall should be done this week. When finished, it will illustrate the history of Black Hawk Mini Park, as well as display plaques celebrating some of Iowa City’s notable residents. Rain has delayed plantings in various planters in the park.

Work continues on the Stage Canopy, as crews worked on its electrical sytem. In the coming weeks, glass will be installed on the north side of the stage, gutters will be added, and a banner-rigging system will also be installed.

Brick pavers were placed between the Iowa City Public Library and the playground as well.

As Phase II starts, all benches will be removed, as well as lighting. Temporary lights will be installed. Some trees will also be removed.

Pavement replacement will also start on the southern side of College Street in the Ped Mall. The pavement replacement will begin near Dubuque Street and work east and west towards Linn Street and Clinton Street respectively.

During Phase II, the Weatherdance Fountain will be operational all summer long. The playground by the Library also will remain open for the public. All Downtown Iowa City businesses, including the Library, will remain open during construction.

The next Ped Mall business meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2019 at the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room D, 123 S. Linn St.
