Crews to paint dedicated bike lanes on Sycamore Street

Crews will begin work on a pavement marking project that includes creating dedicated bike lanes on both sides of Sycamore Street.

The work is set to begin the week of Oct. 10, 2016, weather permitting and is expected to last roughly two weeks.

The project will narrow the two-way, left turn lane as well as the northbound and southbound lanes to make way for a 5 ft. dedicated bike lane on both sides of the street. The bike lanes will stretch from the City limits to Highway 6 on Sycamore Street.

Henri Harper, Community Outreach Assistant (COA) for the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) is a familiar face in the Iowa City Community and plans to become even more familiar as he takes on two new projects aimed at building relationships between local youth and ICPD officers.

Lunch with the PD

COA Harper is working with the Iowa City Community School District to facilitate a once-a-week lunch visit with local elementary schools. During these lunchtime visits, grade schoolers will have the opportunity to interact with ICPD officers in a comfortable environment...

Expect traffic delays during 2016 City High School Homecoming Parade

The 2016 City High School Homecoming Parade will be held Wednesday, Oct. 5 starting at 6 p.m.

The parade will begin at Mercer Park and proceed west on Bradford Drive to First Avenue. The parade will then travel north on First Avenue to Bates Field where it will end.

Traffic will not be allowed on or across the parade route once the parade begins. Drivers should take a different route as delays are expected.

Volunteer opportunities: help clean up the Iowa River Trail in October

Volunteers are needed the next four Sundays to help remove trash, invasive species and woody debris along the Iowa River Trail. These efforts help reduce flooding, erosion and improve water quality.

Those interested should sign-up in advance on the City of Iowa City Stormwater Volunteer Opportunities Facebook page .

After serving a 90-day term as Interim Iowa City Police Chief, Captain Troy Kelsay will return to his regular duties as Captain of Field Operations. In order to meet State of Iowa Code requirements, a second appointment to the Interim Chief role has been made by City Manager Geoff Fruin. Captain Bill Campbell will step into the interim position on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016.

People traveling to Iowa City for University of Iowa Homecoming festivities should be aware of the continued construction on Dubuque Street and should expect some delays.

Dubuque Street is currently down to one lane of traffic in each direction from Foster Road to Ronalds Street for work on the Iowa City Gateway Project , a flood mitigation effort.

Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route as they may encounter 15–to-30 minute delays on Dubuque Street during heavy traffic times, including Friday before and after the parade...

Iowa City deploys flood barriers, sandbags and other resources to help communities impacted by recent flooding

Iowa City flood supplies are being used to help protect and clean up several Iowa communities dealing with severe flooding.

Iowa City delivered two shipping containers worth of HESCO barriers to the City of Cedar Rapids and Linn County Sheriff as well as two skid loader attachments used to fill sandbags. City of Iowa City Civil Engineer Jason Reichart also spent time in Cedar Rapids Friday, Sept. 23, helping with the installation of the barriers. Altogether, Iowa City helped supply Cedar Rapids with about a mile worth of HESCO barriers and 3,500 to 4,000 sandbags.

The 100 block of Washington Street, stretching from Clinton to Dubuque Streets, will reopen to two-way traffic, Friday, Sept. 30.

The 100 block reopened to one lane of one-way, westbound traffic earlier this month after being completely closed to traffic for several months as crews worked to replace underground infrastructure and update the street with new amenities like lighting and seating.

People can expect to hear some temporary, loud hammering as crews make progress on the Park Road Bridge.

A loud hammer will be heard for at least the next week as workers drive H Piles as part of abutment foundation work needed for the bridge. We appreciate your patience with the noise as this necessary job is completed.

The work is being done as part of the Iowa City Gateway, a project that will elevate Dubuque Street while also raising and replacing the Park Road Bridge.
