Disruption of online permitting services coming April 21-22

The Iowa City Land Management, Permitting, and Licensing software will undergo planned updates on Thursday, April 21, and Friday, April 22, 2022, causing a disruption of related online City services.

This software is used by Building Inspections, Housing Inspections, the Urban Planning Division, and the Public Works Department. Alcoholic beverage licenses and permits through the City Clerk's Office will also be impacting.

Iowa City Fire Department responds to Sunday evening structure fire

The Iowa City Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 4462 Preston Lane on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at 7:11 p.m. Responding units arrived on scene at 7:16 p.m. and discovered a fire in the end unit of a two-story multi-unit condominium complex. Smoke was visible from the top of the garage door.

Firefighters entered the structure through the garage door and brought the fire under control by 7:30 p.m. The unit was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupants were able to exit safely after being alerted by smoke alarms. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters...

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department will conduct controlled prairie burns at select City parks over the month of April.

Due to the highly unpredictable nature of weather, wind, and ground conditions, there are no guaranteed dates for controlled burns for any of the parks. Burns typically occur between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

A comprehensive burn plan was prepared and approved by the Iowa City Fire Department, and considerations will be made for wind direction and required weather conditions. Privately-owned land areas and structures will be protected, and fire breaks...

With private utility work occurring between North First Avenue and the Ralston Creek Bridge on Rochester Avenue, commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes in order to avoid delays. Scott Lyon was sworn-in as Iowa City Fire Chief during a ceremony Friday, April 8, 2022, in Emma Harvat Hall.

As Fire Chief, Lyon will oversee all fire department operations for the City of Iowa City. The Iowa City Fire Department consists of 64 personnel and four fire stations.

Chief Lyon previously served as Assistant Fire Chief of the Urbandale Fire Department. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Clive. An update to the City's payment software will have wide-ranging impacts on City services, mostly through Thursday, April 21, and Friday, April 22, 2022.

Water billing

The City's Revenue Office will be closed on both days. Residents will not be able to pay their water bill in person, on the phone, or online April 21-22, 2022.

Iowa City Police investigate reported assault

At approximately 1:46 a.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2022, Iowa City Police responded to the 400 Block of South Johnson Street for a report of an assault.

The female victim reported that as she was entering a residence she was approached from behind and attacked by an unknown male. The victim was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for non-life threatening injuries. The victim described the suspect as a man with blonde hair.
