Iowa City Animal Services investigates dog bite

Iowa City Animal Services is investigating a report of a dog bite. The individual reported being near an apartment building in the 600 Block of South Dubuque Street around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, May 1, 2022, when they were bitten by a dog described as a brown and black pit bull terrier. The dog was with a woman described as being approximately 5'5" tall.

Iowa City Animal Services is looking to locate the owner of the dog for information regarding its rabies vaccination history. If anyone has information about the identity of the owner, they are encouraged to contact Iowa City Animal...

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is partnering with the Iowa City Police Department to remind all motorists that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. As May approaches with warmer temperatures throughout the country, the unofficial start of the summer road travel season begins. City of Iowa City again earns Aaa bond rating

Moody's Investors Service has awarded the City of Iowa City the highest credit rating possible, an Aaa bond rating, for its outstanding general obligation debt.

The City has maintained an Aaa rating since November 1973. The top tier Aaa rating ranks Iowa City among the most financially stable cities in the state of Iowa and the nation.

Surveying And Mapping crews to begin work throughout Iowa City neighborhoods

The City of Iowa City has contracted the services of Surveying And Mapping (SAM), LLC, who will begin mapping the City's water and fiber assets in May 2022. This process typically consists of inspecting utility features, using global positioning system (GPS), and equipment. Their work will be ongoing from May through October 2022.

What residents can expect

Residents may notice SAM crews as they survey public infrastructure (i.e. hydrants, valves, boxes, and poles). Most of the work will occur between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Some work may take place...

Iowa City Fire Department responds to structure fire

The Iowa City Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 2128 S. Riverside Dr., Unit 46, at 6:16 p.m. Wednesday, April 27. Firefighters arrived on scene 7 minutes after being dispatched and encountered a large fire in Unit 46, which had also spread to Unit 45.

The occupants of Unit 46 were able to exit the structure. Crews searched Unit 45 for occupants and confirmed it was unoccupied.

Both fires were brought under control at 7 p.m. The total loss to both units is estimated at $60,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Scott Boulevard from First Avenue to Tamarack Trail has been closed to traffic through late July. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use the posted detour.

The detour includes using First and Rochester avenues. Tamarack Trail and Hickory Trail are open to only local traffic and closed to through traffic.

The closure will accommodate construction of a roundabout at the Scott and First intersection.

City Announces Social Justice and Racial Equity Grant Allocations for Fiscal Year 2022

In 2017, the Iowa City City Council created the Social Justice and Racial Equity ("SJRE") Grant to assist community-based organizations in building capacity to address social justice and racial equity needs.

Seventy-five thousand dollars has been allocated yearly for the SJRE Grant since fiscal year 2019. For 2023, the allocation has been increased to $100,000. The grant is available to for-profit and non-profit Iowa City based organizations to fund programs, activities, or services that help eliminate inequities in the community.
