Don’t just throw out that pumpkin after Halloween! The City of Iowa City Solid Waste Division reminds you to compost it instead.

Pumpkins must be placed in a City of Iowa City yard waste bag or a container with a current yard waste sticker. There is a 50-pound weight limit per bag. Pumpkins should not be put in your regular household garbage container.

Yard waste bags, priced at $1.25 each, are available for purchase at participating Iowa City grocery, hardware and general merchandise stores, and at the Iowa City City Hall Cashier (410 E. Washington St.). Generic paper yard...

Road Construction - Gilbert Street

Weather permitting, on Thursday, October 29, 2015, southbound traffic on Gilbert Street, between Iowa Avenue and Jefferson Street, will be reduced to one lane. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate utility work in the area. It is anticipated that that normal traffic will resume by early afternoon of the same day.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time or to seek an alternate route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when driving through all construction areas.

On Sunday, Nov. 1, when Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. and you turn your clocks back one hour, the Iowa City Fire Department reminds you to also change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Just this one little thing can help protect you and your family by reducing injuries or fatalities in the event of a fire.

There are two kinds of smoke alarms. Ionization smoke alarms are quicker to warn about flaming fires, while photoelectric alarms are quicker to warn about smoldering fires. It is best to use both types of alarms in the home. Special alarms...

Saturday roller-skating cancelled Oct. 31

Attention roller-skaters: Saturday Night Roller-skating at Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center has been cancelled this week so that residents can observe the City's Halloween Trick-or-Treat night. The program will resume Saturday, Nov. 14.

Roller-skating has also been cancelled on the following dates due to holidays or other events: Nov. 7, Nov. 20, Dec. 26, Jan. 2, and Jan. 9.

Popo’s Halloween Puppet Festival at ICPL Oct. 31

The Iowa City Public Library’s annual Popo’s Puppet Festival is this Saturday, Oct. 31, in Meeting Room A.

Join Elsenpeter Marionettes and their classic European-style marionettes from 11 to 11:45 a.m. as they tell the story of Jack, who has climbed to heights he never dreamed of – but will he be able to make it home? After a break for lunch, the festival continues from 1 to 1:30 p.m. with an appearance by Popo the Clown.

Buses to detour due to road work on Burlington Street between Summit Street and Muscatine Avenue effective Tuesday, October 27

Effective Tuesday, Oct. 27, buses will detour outbound and inbound using Court Street due to road work on Burlington Street between Summit Street and Muscatine Avenue. The affected routes are the outbound and inbound Court Hill, outbound and inbound Towncrest, and the inbound Night Towncrest.

The outbound bus stop located at Burlington Street and Muscatine Avenue (stop 7249) and the inbound bus stops located at Muscatine Avenue and Burlington Street (stop 7250) and at Burlington Street and Summit Street (stop 7248) will be closed for the duration of the detour.

Weather permitting, beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 27, Burlington Street, between Summit Street and Muscatine Avenue, will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic with flaggers on site to direct traffic. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate the relocation of fire hydrant in the area. It is anticipated that that normal traffic will resume by Wednesday, Oct. 28.

In addition, Terrace Road, south of its intersection with Court Street, will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic.
