Governor announces Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Program details for those with COVID-19 related lost wages

The Governor announced on Friday, May 29, 2020 new details on how the State will help fund rent or mortgage costs for Iowans who have lost wages due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Program will help renters and home owners who have lost wages by:

Providing up to four months of assistance. The program can provide up to $3,200 for renters, and $3,000 for home owners.

The Governor has ordered that outdoor performance venues, bowling alleys, and more may reopen, with restrictions, in Iowa City and Johnson County starting Monday, June 1, 2020. The latest order also allows for recreational, leisure, and sporting gatherings and events of more than 10 people if public health measures are implemented.

Businesses and facilities are required to follow specific guidelines in order to reopen.

North Dodge route to detour due to closure of Rochester Avenue effective Monday, June 1

The North Dodge bus route will detour due to the closure of Rochester Avenue east of 1st Avenue.

The North Dodge outbound route will detour using 1st Avenue to Tudor Drive, to Post Road, to return to regular route on Rochester Avenue. The inbound route will not be affected.

Bus stops located at Rochester and 1st Avenue (#7420) and Rochester and Post Road (#7422) will not be serviced while the closure is in effect.

Normal service is expected to resume effective Monday, June 8, 2020.

The annual Iowa City Emergency Services Youth Summer Camp, held each year in the month of July, has been canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual summer camp teaches local junior high and high school students how local police, firefighters, and ambulance service personnel keep the community safe.

Kids would practice fire skills, like ladders and hoses; learn emergency response tactics, like CPR and first aid; and learn more about law enforcement units, like the K9 unit, the bomb squad, and special investigations unit.

The Governor has ordered that bars, breweries, and other alcohol-related businesses may reopen, with restrictions, in Iowa City and Johnson County starting Thursday, May 28, 2020. Businesses are required to follow specific guidelines in order to reopen.

Due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic, the City has suspended its 4th of July fireworks display for 2020.

The decision comes in collaboration with the Summer of the Arts, whose annual Iowa City Jazz Festival is held in unison with the City's fireworks display.

Pride banners going up throughout Iowa City for Pride Month

In celebration of the 50th Iowa City Pride anniversary and Pride month, The City of Iowa City will be displaying Pride banners along Washington Street, Wade Street, and Williams Street in the month of June. A Pride Flag will also be hung on the flagpole in front of City Hall for the month of June.
