Iowa City Police arrest armed subject Sunday morning

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 31, 2022, Iowa City Police were called to El Ray's Live and Dive, 211 E. Iowa Ave., for an armed subject who threatened bar staff with a gun after being kicked out of the establishment.

Officers located the subject - later identified as 18-year-old Alex Bwayonga - and took him into custody. A stolen firearm was located on the subject. During the course of his arrest, Bwayonga appeared to exhibit signs of a medical emergency. Bwayonga was given care at the scene and evaluated at an area hospital before his arrest.

Iowa City now accepting applications for Non-Profit Operating Assistance projects

The City of Iowa City is now accepting applications from organizations for the use of federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund (SLFRF) funds to address the needs of non-profits who have experienced negative economic impacts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications can be completed using the online form , and will be accepted through August 16, 2022 at noon.

If you are moving this summer, please view the Moving: Waste & Recycling Guid e for helpful information.

A reminder that cardboard, batteries, computer/TV monitors, appliances, oil, tires, and yard waste are not allowed in the trash, and must be properly recycled.

Donation Drive-Thru Event This Sunday!

Join us from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2022, at the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp for the Donation Drive-Thru.

The event entrance will be the Washington Street ramp entrance (across from City Hall), which will be turned into a one-way lane. Vehicles will exit the event on the recreation center side of the ramp onto Burlington Street.

Accepted items for donation

Donation items must be gently-used and in good, working condition. Items that do not meet these specifications will not be accepted. All donations will go directly to non-profit partners.
