September is National Preparedness Month and an excellent time to make sure you and your loved ones are prepared for disasters and emergencies that could occur. This year's theme is "A Lasting Legacy."

Preparedness Month was initiated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to educate the public on how to prepare for emergencies after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, in the United States.

Iowa City’s preliminary quarterly finance report for the quarter that ended June 30, 2022, is now available at www.icgov.org/budget. This report provides information on the City’s fund balances, revenues, and expenditures compared to budgeted amounts and budget variances.

The quarterly finance report is required by the City Council’s Financial and Fiscal Policies.

The west-side elevator in Tower Place Parking Ramp, the staircase closest to Linn Street, will be out of service from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022.

This closure is necessary for required maintenance. Parking with elevator access will be maintained on the east side of Tower Place. We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause.

The Iowa City Climate Ambassador training program is back and is looking for applicants who want to become local climate action leaders.

The program will be accepting applicants from Sept. 12 through Sept. 30, 2022. The program is designed to inform and empower effective climate change leaders within the Iowa City community. As local leaders, Ambassadors will:

Pedestrian access to Dubuque Street ramp stairwells impacted in upcoming weeks

Due to repair work in the Dubuque Street parking ramp, pedestrian access to the stairwells and elevator on Levels 4 & 5 East and Levels 3 & 4 West will be limited at times in the upcoming weeks.

The City urges pedestrians to pay attention to signage and pedestrian traffic control. Access to the stairways, elevators, and stair tower lobby areas will be available at all other locations within the ramp. Repairs are expected to be completed by mid-September.

The City will host an open house on the Southwest District Plan between 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, at Weber Elementary, 3850 Rohret Road.

The Southwest District Plan impacts the southwestern portion of Iowa City south of Rohret Road, west of Highway 218, and north of Highway 1. The open house will be an opportunity for residents to learn more about the future of this area, and to share their thoughts.

Iowa City Police seek assistance in convenience store assault

At approximately 5:18 a.m., Sunday, June 5, 2022, Iowa City Police responded to the L & M Mighty Shop, 504 E. Burlington St., for a report of an assault.

Officers spoke with the clerk, who reported a man with red-tipped dreadlocks entered the store. After getting upset inside the store, the man hit the clerk from across the counter. The clerk reported when he tried to remove the man from the store, the man continued to assault him. The clerk suffered injuries as a result of the assault.

This annual public art program gives Iowa sculptors the opportunity to showcase their work around the Iowa City community. The City of Iowa City’s Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) selects sculptures based on submissions to be put on display for a year.

In 2022, there are eight locations scattered throughout the community at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, along the Iowa River Trail, in Riverfront Crossings Park, and at Mercer and Scott parks....
