Governor: COVID-19 emergency extended; more retail stores ordered closed

Governor Kim Reynolds announced that the State has extended the emergency declaration in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic by a week.

By extending the declaration, all closures and bans initiated on March 17, 2020 due to COVID-19 have been extended until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2020.

This includes the closure of spaces where people could gather and potentially spread the virus: bars, restaurants, event spaces, theaters, fitness centers, and more. A ban on the gathering of more than 10 people was extended as well.

Housing Authority Office closed to the public, offering assistance online or by phone

As part of the City’s COVID-19 response, the Iowa City Housing Authority Office (ICHA) is closed to the public. Housing Authority staff will continue to process needed paperwork, issue rent payments, and answer calls.

The City does not anticipate any disruptions to rent payments at this time. Please continue to report all changes in income and family composition in writing. You can use the following options to contact staff and submit required documents:

Governor announces new Iowa Small Business Relief Program

Governor Kim Reynolds announced on Monday, March 23, 2020, the launch of a new Iowa Small Business Relief Program that will provide financial assistance to small businesses that have been economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program offers eligible small businesses grants ranging from $5,000-$25,000, in addition to offering Iowa businesses a deferral of sales and use or withholding taxes due and waiver of penalty and interest.

Iowa City Transit to continue Spring Break service levels indefinitely

Due to the University of Iowa and Iowa City Schools suspending classes, Iowa City Transit will continue to operate using our Spring Break service levels.

The Downtown Free Shuttle, the AM & PM Eastside Loop will not operate for the time being.

All other service will be provided per normal schedules and times, and service will continue to be free of charge.

City parking decks will also be free of charge.

We strongly encourage the public to stay home and limit transit trips to those that are absolutely essential.
