The City of Iowa City's Office of Equity and Human Rights is hosting two free fair housing training sessions - introductory and intermediate - in April. The introductory training is presented by the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the intermediate training is by the Fair Housing Institute, Inc. The trainings are held in recognition of the 54th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

Both trainings will be available via Zoom. Both are applicable to single family, market rate, low income housing tax credit, rental assistance demonstration, HUD subsidized landlords, property managers, and owners.

Introductory training

The online introductory training will take place on Wed., April 13, 2022, from 9-11 a.m. The training will include information about the protected classes and prohibited practices delineated by state fair housing laws.

Brenna Bormann, a Civil Rights Specialist for the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, will conduct the training. This is considered an introductory course on fair housing under the state of Iowa's civil rights laws.

How to participate in introductory training

Those interested in the introductory training may sign up here. Participants will receive an email from the Office of Equity and Human Rights with the Zoom link closer to the date of the training.

Intermediate training

The online intermediate fair housing training will take place on Wed., April 20 from 10 – Noon (a break will be provided).

The intermediate training will cover best practices, discriminatory advertising, national origin discrimination, tenant on tenant harassment, disparate impact, and religious discrimination under federal fair housing law.

There are no pre-requisites for the intermediate training. However, anyone attending the introductory training can also attend the intermediate training.

The intermediate training will be conducted by Kathelene (Kathi) Williams, one of the founders of The Fair Housing Institute. Learn more about Williams here.
