Moldy bread, sour milk, and wilted veggies — these are all common outcomes of buying too much food. Reduce food waste at home and save money by following our easy, simple tips on how to shop to reduce food waste.

Before you head to the store… Shop your kitchen. Inventory which food items you already have in the refrigerator and pantry to avoid buying duplicates. Make a list. What meals or dishes do you plan to make this week? Identify which ingredients you will need and add them to the list. Eat a snack or meal. Avoid grocery shopping when hungry as you are more susceptible to impulse...

Tower Place Parking Ramp will be closed the evening of Friday, July 8, through Sunday, July 10, 2022 for maintenance. Cars must be removed from the ramp by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 8.

The ramp will also be closed the following two weekends as well: July 15-17, and July 22-24.

Alternative parking ramps include:

Iowa City Police Department launches online reporting system for minor offenses

In an effort to streamline services and allow for social distancing when appropriate and as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Iowa City Police Department on July 1, 2022, launched the Desk Officer Reporting System (DORS).

DORS is an online reporting tool that allows community members to report non-emergency offenses that have occurred with no known suspects. Those incidents include:

Theft From a Motor Vehicle

Iowa City Police Department reminds motorists to drive sober this Fourth of July

This Fourth of July, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working with law enforcement nationwide to reduce impaired driving with the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. NHTSA and the Iowa City Police Department are sharing this reminder for all drivers: If you plan to drink alcohol, plan ahead for a sober driver. Even one or two alcoholic drinks can cause impairment. The goal is to save lives during what is usually one of the deadliest holidays on our roads.

National Night Out will take place Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, and the City of Iowa City wants to hear from neighborhoods that would like to participate in the celebration.

National Night Out is an annual celebration that encourages neighbors to get out of their homes, interact with each other and create connections to foster safer neighborhoods. Some Iowa City neighborhoods have hosted special events featuring food, cool beverages, family-friendly activities, and appearances by Iowa City Police Officers and Firefighters.

Traffic Alert – Rochester Avenue

Weather permitting, beginning on Thursday, June 30, 2022, lanes of traffic will be shifted at various locations during daylight hours on Rochester Avenue between Montrose Avenue and Windsor Drive.

This traffic pattern change will accommodate the relocation of communication lines for an upcoming road construction project. It is anticipated that this work will be completed by Friday, July 8, 2022.

Jazz Festival road closures and transit changes announced

The City will be closing multiple streets Friday, July 1, through Sunday, July 3, 2022, for the Iowa City Jazz Festival.

The annual jazz festival organized by the Summer of the Arts brings over a dozen of the world's best jazz musicians to Downtown Iowa City for a three-day music festival. The City's firework show will take place after 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the Pentacrest, after the last performance of the day.
