Public Art Matching Fund Program now accepting applications

Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, matching funds of up to $3,000 for public arts projects will be available to local artists, the City of Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) announced.

Funded through the Iowa City Public Art Program, visual, audio, or performance-based art such as sculptures, murals, performances, readings, interactive exhibits, video projections, soundscapes, spoken word, and other mediums will be considered. Crews will remove snow in Downtown Iowa City overnight Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, beginning at 2 a.m. Vehicles parked in tow-away zones will be removed.

Towing will impact Prentiss Street to Market Street, Madison Street to Gilbert Street, as well as N. Clinton Street from Market Street to Church Street. The parking in these areas are metered spots, which do not permit parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Follow all posted parking signs to prevent your vehicle from being towed.

With the snowfall ending at 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, sidewalks in Iowa City must be cleared within 24-hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians. Those who do not remove snow and ice may be fined.

The 10 - West Iowa City bus route has been detoured due to snowy road conditions.

The route will temporarily bypass the off-peak loop serving Coll Drive, Jensen Street, Irving Avenue, and Shannon Drive, due to slick conditions and buses getting stuck. Updates will be provided.

Yard waste/organics materials placed at the curb on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, will not be collected.

Due to the winter weather advisory, the collection of the yellow-lid yard waste/organics carts will be suspended to divert all staff for garbage/recycling collection. This will help garbage collection staff complete their routes prior to the snowstorm.

Organics/yard waste normally collected on Jan. 14 will be collected on Jan. 21, 2021.

Mercer Park Aquatic Center to reopen Jan. 17; updated hours announced for City's indoor pools

After an extensive dehumidification project at Mercer Park Aquatic Center, the facility is planned to reopen to the public on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022.

Along with the reopening, hours for both Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and Mercer Park pools have been updated. Pool schedules at both facilities now include hours listed as ‘open’ rather than designated for a specific type of swim activity. Sections of each pool will be signed for the appropriate use.

The fire in a Bronx, New York, apartment building that killed at least 17 people was started by a malfunctioning space heater, according to officials there. A door left open in the building also contributed to the spread of the fire.
