Iowa City took home the trophy following a charity competition among local government groups.

The Severson Challenge is an annual holiday donation drive among local government staff. It is named for the late Linda Severson, the former Human Services Planning Coordinator for the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) . Severson was passionate about helping those in need.

The Iowa City & Johnson County community will again host the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) as a Cyclo-cross World Cup race site for the 2017-2018 season.

Most recognized in road cycling for organizing the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Veulta a Espana, the UCI is the governing body in the sport of cycling and headquartered out of Aigle, Switzerland. The Iowa City Police Department has received three separate reports of residents being involved in an online social media extortion scam.

In these instances, a person posing as a young female will send a friend request to a male subject using social media. Over the course of the interaction, conversations are initiated and an online relationship develops. The person, posing as a female, then convinces the victims to participate in personal actions online, which are then recorded using another social media recording application.

ICPL’s Mormon Trek remote book drop out of commission

The Iowa City Public Library’s west side remote book drop, located at the University of Iowa Community Credit Union office, 825 Mormon Trek Blvd., is out of commission.

A vehicle backed into the book drop on Thursday, Jan. 26, making the return unit inoperable.

The Library is working with the vendor to secure a replacement as quickly as possible, but an exact date is not yet known. An announcement will be made as soon as there is more information.

ICPL thanks the community for their patience and understanding, and apologizes for the inconvenience.

Iowa City's new Police Chief Jody Matherly was sworn-in during an early morning ceremony at City Hall on Monday, January 23, 2017.

The existing pedestrian detour on Dubuque Street south of the Park Road Bridge will continue through the end of February, and possibly into early March.
