New ICPL Services Allows Patrons to Freeze Holds

Just in time for spring break, the Iowa City Public Library has added a new service, Freezing Holds, that will enable patrons to manage their holds.

Library patrons may have 10 free holds at one time, with requests filled on a first come, first serve basis. Holds, or reserves, can be placed on materials checked out to other patrons, or on materials checked in and available, which a staff member will pull and put on the Holds shelf. Patrons are notified when their requested materials are available, and given a six-day window to visit ICPL to check out the items.

A final public open house and input session was held at City Hall for the Riverfront Crossings streetscape plan on Thursday, Feb. 18. The presentation and open house provided another opportunity for the public to review and discuss concepts for improved public sidewalk, landscaping, street trees, lighting, signage, entranceway features and other amenities.

ICPL announces March Classes for Adults

Are you creative? Do you enjoy learning new computer skills? The Iowa City Public Library will be teaching classes on GIMP, free graphic design software, and YouTube which has a built-in video editor in March. When you learn how to use these tools, you can edit and create personalized videos, or make cards, invites and other graphics on the computer.

Looking for a fun and educational outlet for your child during Spring Break? Look no further than the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department's Spring Break Camps, scheduled March 14-18 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration begins Wednesday, March 2, and forms are now available at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street, or the Mercer/Scanlon facility, 2701 Bradford Drive. Registration forms are also available online at www.icgov.org/event/spring-break-camp .

Road Construction - Washington Street

Weather permitting, on Thursday, Feb. 25, Washington Street will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic between Clinton Street and Dubuque Street. This lane reduction is necessary for the placement of a crane to facilitate the delivery of materials to a rooftop in the area. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by late morning.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

ICPL to Host Crazy 8s Math Club for Kids

What do you get when you add hands-on activities plus fun-loving kids? Crazy 8s Math Club!

The Iowa City Public Library is joining the national movement to make math the cool thing to do after school by hosting a Crazy 8s Math Club for elementary students in kindergarten through second grade. Beginning March 2, this fun and educational program will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room every Wednesday for eight weeks.

The Iowa City Police Department will host a Coffee with a Cop event from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 at the west side Java House, 713 Mormon Trek Boulevard. Residents are invited to join their neighbors, friends and co-workers to discuss community issues with neighborhood police officers.
