The City of Iowa City has released the name of the individual who drowned at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area Friday afternoon: Eric Mutarika, 22. 

No other information will be released about this incident as of Monday afternoon. 


On Friday, May 31, 2019, at approximately 3:42 p.m., the Iowa City Police Department, the Iowa City Fire Department, the Johnson County Ambulance Service, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson County Metro Dive Team responded to a report of a witnessed drowning at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area at 579 McCollister Boulevard in Iowa City.  The Trueblood Recreation Area is a 152-acre park with a 96-acre lake owned by the City of Iowa City that was opened in 2012. A deceased male was recovered from the water on the southwest side of the lake near the shelter on the peninsula.  The Iowa City Police Department, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson County Medical Examiner are conducting a concurrent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Identification of the victim is pending notification of the family.
