Governor announces new Iowa Small Business Relief Program

Governor Kim Reynolds announced on Monday, March 23, 2020, the launch of a new Iowa Small Business Relief Program that will provide financial assistance to small businesses that have been economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program offers eligible small businesses grants ranging from $5,000-$25,000, in addition to offering Iowa businesses a deferral of sales and use or withholding taxes due and waiver of penalty and interest.

Iowa City Transit to continue Spring Break service levels indefinitely

Due to the University of Iowa and Iowa City Schools suspending classes, Iowa City Transit will continue to operate using our Spring Break service levels.

The Downtown Free Shuttle, the AM & PM Eastside Loop will not operate for the time being.

All other service will be provided per normal schedules and times, and service will continue to be free of charge.

City parking decks will also be free of charge.

We strongly encourage the public to stay home and limit transit trips to those that are absolutely essential.

City suspends transit fares during COVID-19 pandemic

Starting Thursday, March 19, 2020, Transit has suspended fares for all buses and now asks riders to enter the bus through the back door in response to COVID-19, or the Coronavirus.

The measures help promote social distancing, while also enabling the City to provide essential transportation services. We strongly encourage the public to limit travel on buses to essential trips only.

Riders with mobility devices or mobility issues can still board through the front door by simply knocking on the front entrance.

City declares Civil Emergency due to COVID-19

Mayor Bruce Teague declared a Civil Emergency in Iowa City due to the dangers presented by COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus.

The declaration gives Mayor Teague additional measures to maintain health, welfare, and safety within the community.

One measure enacted gives the Iowa City Police Department the ability to, by criminal citation or arrest, enforce Governor Kim Reynold's State of Emergency orders, which includes:

City Hall closes to the public due to COVID-19

With Governor Kim Reynolds declaring a State of Public Health Disaster Emergency due to the COVID-19 virus, the City will close City Hall to the public starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020.

The front lobby of City Hall will remain open to allow access to the Iowa City Police Department, which will continue to operate normally.

All other City offices in City Hall, including Revenue for paying utility bills, will be closed to the public. Services can be taken care of over the phone, online, or through the mail.
