Iowa City Ranks Among the Best Cities for K-12 Teachers to Live and Work

Iowa City is among the top 10 percent of communities in the country for educators specializing in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

A recent study compiled by the research firm GoodCall ranked Iowa City No. 27 out of 267 communities because of its affordable living, healthy job market and strong educational values.

“We are proud that Iowa City is home to many talented educators who are making a difference in the lives of our children,” Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton said. “We hope to continue to attract top teaching talent to our vibrant community.”

Iowa City Police Chief Sam Hargadine has announced the promotion of Sergeant David Droll to the rank of Lieutenant. The promotion was marked during a ceremony held Wednesday, March 23 at Emma J. Harvat Hall in City Hall.

Lieutenant Droll has been assigned as the Acting Commander of Administrative Services. He was hired by the Iowa City Police Department on September 9, 1991, and has served as a patrol officer, investigator, bicycle officer, field training officer, and firearms instructor before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant on March 18, 2010. Due to high winds, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center at 3900 Hebl Avenue, Iowa City, will be closing at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 23. The Landfill is expected to reopen on Thursday on its regular schedule.

The City Council of Iowa City has announced two listening posts in April. The first will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1 at Pheasant Ridge Neighborhood Center, 2651 Roberts Road.

The second listening post will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20 at the University Capitol Centre (Old Capitol Town Centre), 200 S. Capitol Street, room 2520D on the 2nd floor.

Landfill will be closed Wednesday due to high winds

Due to the threat of high winds, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center at 3900 Hebl Avenue, Iowa City, will be closed all day on Wednesday, March 16. Sustained winds of up to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are predicted, which could cause tree and other damage and create dangerous driving and travel conditions. The Landfill is expected to reopen on Thursday on its regular schedule.
