Mayor Jim Throgmorton has proclaimed Wednesday, April 3, 2019, as Marriage Equality Day in Iowa City.

This date marks the 10th anniversary of the Iowa Supreme Court ruling in the Varnum v. Brien case, stating the Iowa Constitution gave same-sex couples the right to marry. The decision came six years before the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. Iowa was the third state to grant marriage equality, after Massachusetts and Connecticut.

During the City Council meeting of April 2, 2019, Throgmorton read and signed the proclamation, which can be read in full online.
