Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on Nov. 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States.
The City of Iowa City invites you to celebrate America Recycles Day 2016 with two events:
"Sometimes I Wonder What I Was to You"
Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, 4-6 p.m.
The Environmental Education Center at East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE
Join local artist Chrissy Cooper to explore how humans interact with single use items, resources, trash and litter. The show is fashioned entirely from the leftover parts of our lives, i.e. the trash we leave behind. It explores our relationship with single use items as just that, a relationship. A disposable coffee cup has a very specific destiny, to help one person have one cup of coffee at a specific time and place. Coffee consumed, the cup is discarded, and (one can only imagine) is left feeling a little disappointed with the encounter. “Sometimes I Wonder” picks up where we left off, and helps the discarded find their voice.
Attendees are welcome to drop in any time between 4 and 6 pm for a “trash interview” and to do a litter print collage. Ms. Cooper will also have an exhibit of her work in the Education Center.
What are we going to do with all our STUFF?
Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, 7-8:30 p.m.
Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A
Want to de-clutter, organize, or downsize? Join us as we learn how to take on the task of deciding what to do with all our stuff. Mary Lea Kruse is an experienced organizer and has taught a longer version of this workshop at the Senior Center. We’ll have some review of the first two sessions (“Where to Start” and “Paper, Photos and Memorabilia”) and wrap up with “Passing it On.”
This series, free and open to the public, is brought to you by the Iowa City Public Library, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center and ECO Iowa City.
Every little bit helps, so please pitch in this America Recycles Day! See www.icgov.org/recycling for information on the City’s recycling programs, including curbside recycling, drop-off sites, composting and much more!
