Safe Kids Johnson County will hold its Safe Kids Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 at the Coral Ridge Mall South Parking Lot. The event will be held in partnership with the Johnson County Emergency Medical Services Awareness Day, offering an opportunity for children and adults to gain a greater understanding of safety, injury prevention, and life-saving services.

Child Passenger Safety Technicians will offer a Car Seat Safety Check Station, during which car seats will be inspected for proper installation. Parents, grandparents, childcare providers and others who travel with children in the car are invited to bring their vehicle, child, and child safety seat to the event and drive in for a free check-up.

Bike helmets will be sold inside the mall near the Iowa Children’s Museum for a reduced price of $10 per helmet. A properly-fitted helmet is the most effective way to prevent a head injury resulting from a bicycle crash.

Exhibits are also scheduled for school bus safety, water safety, and childhood injuries. Fire engines, police vehicles and ambulances will be on display for the kids to tour and enjoy, and a fire extinguisher game will provide an additional fun and educational opportunity.

Safe Kids Johnson County is led by Mercy Hospital Iowa City and the Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD) to provide resources to help parents and caregivers keep kids safe and prevent childhood injuries.
