Due to the impending winter storm, the City of Iowa City’s leaf vacuum program has been suspended until further notice.

The equipment utilized for the leaf program is the same equipment that is utilized for City snow plowing operations. Crews are now focusing on preparing and converting all equipment for Friday’s expected snowfall. It is the Streets Division’s priority to ensure that the roadways are kept safe for all residents, as well as visitors arriving for the Hawkeye football game on Saturday.

The Streets Division will re-evaluate the weather next week. If the extended forecast allows, it may be possible for leaf collection to continue the first week in December.

Iowa City residents who still have leaves to dispose of are encouraged to bag their leaves in City of Iowa City yard waste bags and place them out for collection on their regular garbage day.

Yard waste bags, priced at $1.25 each, are available for purchase at participating Iowa City grocery, hardware and general merchandise stores, and at the Iowa City City Hall Cashier (410 E. Washington St.). For a list of stores, visit www.icgov.org/yardwaste. Generic paper yard waste bags cannot be substituted for City-branded yard waste bags if you wish for curbside pickup.

Iowa City residents may also take leaves to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center free of charge. The Landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on major holidays and windy days.
