Iowa DNR completes PFAS analysis of Iowa City drinking water

In November 2021, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (Iowa DNR) sampled Iowa City's drinking water as part of the State's PFAS action plan. PFAS refers to the family of chemicals known as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances.

The Environmental Protection Agency has released a health advisory level associated with two PFAS - Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) - at a combined concentration of 70 ppt (parts per trillion). The results of Iowa City's PFAS samples found no detectable PFOA or PFOS.

Iowa City's annual year-end financial report, which provides information on actual income, incurred expenses, and financial position through the end of fiscal year 2021, is now available at icgov.org/budget . Compilation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) is required by the Iowa Code.

The 144-page report will be reviewed by the City Council and submitted to the City's bondholders.

Iowa City Police investigate shooting, suspect in custody

Iowa City Police responded to 402 Fairchild St. at approximately 9:46 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021, for multiple reports of shots fired.

Responding officers entered the residence and encountered the suspected shooter in the second floor of the home. A firearm was recovered. Police also encountered an individual suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. That person has been hospitalized and is being treated for his injuries.

The suspect is in custody and charges are pending. Police do not believe there is an active public safety threat associated with this incident.

Fireworks reminders for New Year celebrations in Iowa City

Do not celebrate the New Year with your own personal firework show in Iowa City. Using fireworks inside city limits is prohibited, and violators will face a minimum fine of $250.

Residents are encouraged to speak directly with their neighbors regarding the use of illegal fireworks. Reports can also be made to public safety dispatchers at 319-356-6800. Please provide an address when reporting your concern.

Curbside collection to run regular service schedule this holiday season; Christmas tree pickup begins

Because Christmas and New Year's Day are both on Saturdays this holiday season, curbside garbage, recycling, and organics pickup will run as normal. Please have items to the curb by 7 a.m. on your normal pickup day.

Iowa City Human Rights Commissioner Adil Adams passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 26, 2021. Adams was serving his sixth year on the Human Rights Commission.

Born and raised in Sudan, Adams was an agent of change in the Sudanese community and known for always putting others before himself. Adams earned a law degree while in Khartoum, Sudan; as well as an MBA from Mount Mercy University. Adams was passionate about helping others - as evidenced by his involvement on both the Human Rights Commission and within the Sudanese community.
