Iowa City Clerk Marian Karr announces retirement

City Clerk Marian Karr has announced her retirement after serving the Iowa City community for the past 37 years. Karr was hired as Deputy City Clerk in 1979 and appointed City Clerk by the City Council in 1983. The City Clerk position is one of the top administrative roles in City government and is one of three City employees directly appointed by the City Council. Karr’s expected retirement date is Friday, Dec. 30, 2016.

Iowa City Police Department Re-Accreditation Assessment Team invites public comment

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive in Iowa City on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, to examine aspects of the Iowa City Police Department's (ICPD) policy and procedures, management, operations, and services. Verification by the team that the ICPD meets the Commission's state-of-the art standards is a part of a voluntary process to maintain accreditation. Accreditation is important to the ICPD as it keeps our policies current with the best practices across the United States.

Just in time for the holidays, the Iowa City Public Library will host the Fifth Annual Arts & Crafts Bazaar and Winter Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.

The craft bazaar will be held in meeting rooms A, B and C at the Library, 123 S. Linn St. The used book sale will take place in the hallway outside Meeting Room A. Shoppers can name their own price all day at the book sale.

Animal Center to host Holiday with the Hounds on Dec. 10

It will be a holiday chorus of a whole different kind when the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center hosts its annual Holiday with the Hounds event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016. Holiday with the Hounds doubles as a holiday open house for people who are interested in adopting a pet, as well as a supply drive for shelter animals. It’s time once again for local writers to submit poems for consideration in the 15th annual Poetry in Public Program, sponsored by the City of Iowa City Public Art Program. Writers of all ages and levels of writing ability are encouraged to submit entries to the contest, which is sponsored by the City of Iowa City Public Art Program. Dubuque Street traffic reminders following UI football games

Dubuque Street will again temporarily convert to a one-way following the Iowa vs. Nebraska game Friday, Nov. 25.

A few reminders about the traffic change:

Two-way access from I-80 to Foster Road/B'Jaysveill Lane will be maintained. Those located in all areas of Peninsula, Idylwyld, Taft Speedway & B’Jaysville Lane can come and go via the interstate during the temporary one-way conversion.

Digital signage will be posted on I-80 noting the lack of southbound access on Dubuque, but people who need to access any location including and north of Foster can still...
