Tree-clearing for Gateway Project begins this week

Weather permitting, on Tuesday, March 8, tree-clearing will get underway along North Dubuque Street to prepare for the start of construction on the Iowa City Gateway Project. The tree-removal work will progress along Dubuque Street through Friday, April 15, with crews operating between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The trees will be replaced in a later phase of the project.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling in this construction area, and allow extra travel time for possible delays. Periodic lane closures on the following streets will occur:

Registration now open for roller-skating lessons

Learn how to roller-skate or improve on current skills through a new class with the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department and the Iowa City Bruisers youth roller-derby team. This class gives skaters the opportunity to practice their skating skills with the help of qualified skating instructors. Roller-skates and safety equipment will be provided.

The program will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday evenings, April 4 through May 9 at Grant Wood Elementary Gym, 1930 Lakeside Drive. The program fee is $25 per student.

Road Construction - Mormon Trek Boulevard

Weather permitting, beginning on Monday, March 7, southbound traffic on Mormon Trek Boulevard will be reduced to one lane from Rohret Road/Cae Drive to Abbey Lane. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate work on electrical facilities in the area. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by the end of the day on Friday, March 11.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Several bus routes to detour due to construction on S. Clinton Street effective March 7, 2016

Effective Monday, March 7, 2016 the outbound Lakeside, outbound Mall and the inbound Cross Park routes will detour due to construction work on S. Clinton Street between Burlington Street and Court Street for the School of Music project. The detours will be in place for approximately five weeks.

Iowa City Police Department announces promotion following retirement of Sergeant Brian Krei

After a 35-year career with the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD), Sergeant Brian Krei retired March 1, 2016.

Sergeant Krei has been with the ICPD since August 1982 and was promoted to the position of sergeant in July 1999. As a sergeant, he served in the Patrol Division and in the Records Division as the Public Information Officer. He takes with him a vast knowledge of the ICPD and its operations and will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of working with him.
