Animal Services holds no-cost microchipping clinic for dogs

Iowa City Animal Services is holding a no-cost microchip clinic for dogs on Saturday, June 11, 2016 from 9 a.m. to noon at MidWest One bank, 1906 Keokuk Street, Iowa City.

This event is first-come, first-served, rain or shine. Dogs must be properly restrained and on a leash at all times. The dog's owner will be required to sign a waiver and complete a form with basic contact information.

Microchipping is a quick, easy, and permanent procedure, and helps swiftly reunite dogs with their owners if the dog gets lost.

There’s something new to “adopt” from the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center -- the center’s new e-newsletter, “The Wag!”

The monthly newsletter, which launched earlier this month, will share information on animal care, pet ownership requirements, Animal Center events, volunteer opportunities, and various other responsibilities of Iowa City Animal Services. Each e-newsletter will also introduce pets that are available for adoption.

Milkweed plant starts available at Mercer Market

Due to high demand at last week’s Mercer Farmers Market, Friends of Hickory Hill will have milkweed starter plants for sale for $1 per plant from 3 to 6 p.m., this Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at the Mercer Farmers Market. Proceeds from plant sales will go to Friends of Hickory Hill. Milkweed is a favorite of monarch butterflies, both for laying their eggs and eating. Planting milkweed in your garden provides a perfect habitat for these butterflies that are experiencing decreasing numbers in the past few years.

Iowa City Firefighters Extinguish Evening Fire

The Iowa City Fire Department worked to put out a fire Monday evening.

Crews responded to a building fire Monday, June 6, 2016 at 5:49 p.m. at 1412 Dickenson Lane, Iowa City. Crews arrived to a fire that was spreading from a storage shed to a multi-level home. Crews quickly attacked the outside fire and then made an aggressive interior attack, finding a large fire in the attic. Firefighters brought the fire under control in about a half-hour.

Construction Update - Melrose Ave & Sunset St intersection

Weather permitting, on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, the north side of the Melrose Ave. and Sunset St. intersection will be closed to begin roadway reconstruction.

Vehicle traffic moving east-west on Melrose Ave. and south on Sunset St. will function normally. Vehicles will be detoured on Golfview Ave. and Grand Ave. to access Sunset St. north of Melrose. The sidewalk along the north side of the intersection will also be closed. Pedestrian traffic is being detoured to the south side of Melrose Ave. between Sunset St. and Birkdale Ct.

2016 Summer Playgrounds program begins Monday, June 6

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Playgrounds Drop-in Program provides games, arts and crafts, nature activities and special events for children completing grades K-6. The program runs Monday - Friday, June 6- July 29 at Highland, North Market Square, Wetherby and Willow Creek Parks in Iowa City. Programs will not meet on July 4. Younger children may attend with a participating adult 18 years of age and older. Revenue Division Office will close early on Friday, June 10

The City of Iowa City Revenue Division at City Hall, 410 E. Washington Street, will close at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016, for maintenance on the department’s billing system. Customers will not be able to make payments for utility or landfill bills, purchase yard waste bags or stickers, or conduct other business transactions in the office, online or by phone during the system maintenance.

This will also temporarily impact the Human Resources office, as job postings and the online application system will not be accessible, but their office will remain open.
