Human Rights Commission accepts Proclamation for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Human Rights Commissioner Roger Lusala accepted the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day proclamation from Mayor Bruce Teague.

The day celebrates the life of Dr. King by honoring him on his birthday. This remembrance serves to empower individuals and embolden the Iowa City community to move closer to Dr. King’s vision of a Beloved Community. A Beloved Community is justice, not for any one oppressed group, but for all people.

Cedar Rapids rail company purchases 30 acre lot for rail to truck loading facility in Iowa City

Iowa Interstate Railroad LLC (IAIS) will be purchasing roughly 30 acres in Iowa City's southeast industrial campus, the company and City announced this week.

The purchase will allow for the creation of a new rail-to-truck transloading facility. The plot of land is located about 1,000 yards east of 420th Street's intersection with Highway 6.

Registration open for Good Trouble Youth Activism Summit

The Good Trouble Youth Summit invites students in grades 6-12 to to participate in a series of workshops on different types of activism.

The summit will take place Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, from 2-5 p.m. at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and will include workshops on Advocacy as Activism on Micro and Macro Levels. A free shuttle to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Celebration event at Mercer Park and Aquatic Center will be offered on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023.

Salt/Sand mix available for residents during winter

The City provides a limited amount of salt and sand mix available at no charge to all Iowa City residents. The pile is located at the Streets Division parking lot, located off of South Gilbert Street in the parking lot at 3901 Napoleon Lane.

Iowa City residents should provide their own five-gallon bucket and shovel to obtain the mix, which is intended for local residential sidewalks, and not for commercial or contractor use. Materials will be replenished throughout the winter.

The Iowa City Area Chinese Association (ICACA) will host the 2023 Lunar New Year Gala from 4-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023. The event will take place at The Englert Theatre, 221 W. Washington St.

The Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and the South District Neighborhood Association are issuing a call for emerging artists to design, fabricate, and install a new bus stop bench along Highway 6 East, just east of Heinz Road.

The emerging artist will lead the project with assistance from a Project Mentor, and will also include neighborhood feedback into the bench design. The project will be designed, built, and installed by Fall 2023.

The City of Iowa City is pleased to announce the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has classified the City a Class 6 in the agency's Community Rating System (CRS) for floodplain management.

The CRS is a voluntary federal incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
