Iowa City is among the top 10 percent of communities in the country for educators specializing in kindergarten through twelfth grade. 

A recent study compiled by the research firm GoodCall ranked Iowa City No. 27 out of 267 communities because of its affordable living, healthy job market and strong educational values.

“We are proud that Iowa City is home to many talented educators who are making a difference in the lives of our children,” Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton said. “We hope to continue to attract top teaching talent to our vibrant community.” 

Teachers in Iowa City are earning an average salary of just under $51,000 with ample job opportunities available to recent education graduates. The city boasts a 93 percent high school graduation rate with just under half of its population having earned a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Unique local amenities are an added attraction for educators, as they can enjoy nearly 420 restaurants, bars and entertainment venues outside of work.

To determine Iowa City’s ranking, GoodCall compiled information from the US Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, The National Center for Education Statistics and the career search website Indeed.com.
