Black History Month 2023

The City will be hosting and co-hosting numerous events throughout February 2023 to commemorate Black History Month.

Events will include presentations, book club discussions, and more. All commemorations are designed to celebrate the impact Black Americans have had on our country and educate participants on the barriers Black Americans have faced and still face today.

In a joint statement provided by Mayor Bruce Teague and Police Chief Dustin Liston, the City offers a response to the brutal death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols following the release of the Memphis Police Department’s deadly arrest video.

Animal Services investigating dog bite

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, Iowa City Animal Services received notification of a community member who was bitten by a dog. According to the information provided, the bite occurred around midnight the morning of Jan. 25 in the area of the 600 Block of South Dodge Street outside of a residence. The victim was attempting to break up a fight between their dog who was on a leash and a brindle pit bull-type dog. The loose dog was with his owner but unleashed. The owner was observed as a slender male. Another man was at the scene inside the residence.

Human Rights Commission elects new Chair and Vice Chair

At its Jan. 24, 2023, meeting, the Iowa City Human Rights Commission elected Roger Lusala as Chair and Sylvia Jons as Vice Chair. Lusala has served on the commission since 2021 and Jons since 2022.

Lusala has volunteered as a soccer coach with the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Club for more than 20 years. Lusala is a member of the Iowa City Noon Rotary, City High Booster Club, the Iowa Association of Community Providers, and the Johnson County Community Providers Group. Iowa City Transit adds bus stop at UI’s English Philosophy Building

Iowa City Transit is once again adding a bus stop at the University of Iowa’s English Philosophy Building (EPB). Service at this stop will begin Monday, Jan. 30, 2023.

Stop #7340 will be added to the 10-West Iowa City route. It will be located at the same stop Cambus currently uses in the 200 Block of West Iowa Avenue, just east of the Iowa Avenue Bridge.

The stop was pulled from service in 2021, but is being reintroduced following public feedback.

Overnight snow brings reminder to clear sidewalks of snow, ice

With an overnight snow ending around 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023, residents should clear their sidewalks of snow and ice. Remember, it's easier to remove snow before it becomes packed down by sidewalk users.

Sidewalks in Iowa City must be cleared within 24 hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians. Property owners who do not remove snow and ice in this timeframe may be subject to fines.

The City's Office of Equity and Human Rights and the Climate Action and Outreach Division will host “Accelerating Black Leadership in Sustainability”, a virtual discussion with Arthur Burton and Kamel Elgiseer, from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023.
