City asks transit users to wear cloth masks while on buses

Due to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention's recent recommendation that people should wear cloth masks while in public spaces where social distancing may not be possible, the City is asking transit riders to please wear a cloth mask when riding a bus.

Wearing a cloth mask while riding transit will help keep both the drivers and riders safe, and limit the spread of COVID-19. City bus drivers also have access to, and and wear, masks.

With grocery stores still open and serving residents as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a guide on how to safely grocery shop.

Iowa City Farmers Market pushes opening day to Saturday, June 6, 2020

The Iowa City Farmers Market is postponing its opening until Saturday, June 6, 2020. The decision is based on information provided by the CDC regarding limiting social gatherings to no more than 10 people.

The Iowa City Farmers Market will practice the recommended procedures for safety in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The date and format could change depending on the developments of the COVID-19 pandemic. The market is usually held Wednesdays and Saturdays at Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp the first week in May through the last week in October.

Governor orders malls, more stores closed due to COVID-19 pandemic

The Governor announced that the State will close malls, campgrounds, and more stores due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the Monday news conference, the Governor also stressed that all Iowans need to stay home, and to only leave their homes for essential reasons: to get food, medical care, or if they are an essential worker required to leave for work.

The closure of City facilities to the public, including City Hall and recreation centers, has been extended through Thursday, April 30, 2020, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, April 2, 2020, the Governor extended the closures of schools, businesses, venues such as movie theaters and concert venues, dine-in restaurants, and extended the ban on gatherings of 10 or more people, through April 30.

With City Hall closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City is reminding residents that they can drop off utility bill payments at the dropbox located outside of City Hall.

The dropboxes have been moved back to their original location: in the City Hall parking lot immediately east of the building, across the street from New Pioneer Food Co-op on Van Buren Street. Cash or check are accepted. Please include your payment stub, or the address and account number to apply the payment to.

Service Notice: Route changes affecting Oakcrest bus service on weekdays starting Thursday, April 2, 2020.

On Monday, March 30, 2020, Iowa City Transit made temporary changes to its weekday service in response to COVID-19, including ending weekday service at 8 p.m. and providing hourly service on most routes using “Saturday” routes and schedules.

Starting Thursday, April 2, 2020, Iowa City Transit will further modify service on the Oakcrest route during peak travel periods.
