Note: The City is currently our of Pride signs. This will be updated when new signs arrive.

June is Pride Month, so the City’s Office of Equity and Human Rights is offering free Pride yard signs available for Iowa City residents for pick up at City Hall. Please be advised that City Hall offices are still closed for regular business, but signs will be available at the front lobby information desk.

The reusable sign is waterproof, making it perfect for any home or business outdoor space. Display your Iowa City Pride by simply inserting the included H stake into the plastic yard sign and then into the lawn to get the message across.

The annual Pride celebration began as a collective protest advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities, and freedom in expressing gender identity. The national tradition of celebrating Pride in June is a tribute to the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, which are remembered as the launch of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Transgender people of color, including Marsha P. Johnson, Silvia Rivera, and Storme DeLarverie, were primary leaders in the Stonewall expression of just treatment for LGBTQ+ people, who gave their work and lives to the cause. The City of Iowa City recognizes the many LGBTQ+ lives that continue to be lost each year in pursuit of living out their authentic identities, in particular, transgender people of color.

Although City Hall is still closed for regular business, signs can be picked up at the information desk of City Hall, 410 E. Washington St., during regular business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. We ask that you please wear a mask when entering the building.

Because of the limited number of signs available, we ask that you take only one sign per household.

Be sure to follow these basic rules to avoid City sign ordinance violations: 1.) Signs must be on the resident's property – not within the right of way. 2.) Signs on a corner lot cannot block the vision triangle of the street.
