If you’re a Hawkeye fan, it’s going to be one of the biggest and best weekends ever in Iowa City sports history, with four top sporting events lined up for Friday and Saturday. A Hawkeye Pep Rally planned downtown on Friday will kick off a weekend that includes basketball double header action; an outdoor wrestling dual, Grapple on the Gridiron; and another exciting football Saturday, where the undefeated Hawkeyes take on a Big Ten rival.
Fans are encouraged to wear their gold and black to show their support for the Hawkeyes at a Pep Rally beginning Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. -- an hour earlier than originally announced. The rally will be held at the Weatherdance Fountain Stage in the Ped Mall in Downtown Iowa City, and will feature appearances by Herky, the Spirit Squads, members of the Hawkeye Marching Band, and more. Gary Dolphin, Voice of the Hawkeyes, will serve as emcee for the event, with special guests to include Dan Gable and members of the Iowa wrestling coaching staff.
The Pep Rally, sponsored by the Johnson County I-Club, is free and open to all fans. The Sheraton’s Share Wine Lounge outdoor cafe will serve as the official beverage garden for the event.
After the pep rally, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the women’s basketball team takes the court against North Dakota at 6 p.m., followed by a men’s game against North Carolina's Gardner-Webb beginning at 8:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the much-anticipated Grapple on the Gridiron gets underway at 11 a.m. at Kinnick Stadium, when Iowa wrestlers take on Oklahoma State. Later that evening, at 7 p.m., the Hawkeye football team meets the Minnesota Golden Gophers as they seek another win in a perfect 9-0 football season.
In addition to the Johnson County I-Club, pep rally partners include the City of Iowa City, Iowa City Downtown District, UI Alumni Association, and the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. Sponsors are AW Welt Ambrisco, 3E-Electrical Engineering and Equipment, Hills Bank and Trust Company, Twelve 01 Kitchen and Tap Coralville, and University of Iowa Community Credit Union.
