Three new Iowa City Police officers were sworn in during a ceremony Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021 in Emma Harvat Hall. 

Officer Michelle Schultz is a native of Goldfield, Iowa. She earned her bachelor's degree from Simpson College and graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in April 2020. Schultz previously worked as a patrol officer for the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Officer Justin Van Est is a native of Muscatine, Iowa. He earned his bachelor's degree in 2016 from William Penn University and graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in April 2018. Van Est previously worked as a correctional officer in the Muscatine County Jail and a patrol officer with the Muscatine Police Department. 

Officer Alec Fjelstul is a native of Decorah, Iowa. He earned his associates degree from Kirkwood Community College and graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in August 2018. Fjestul was previously employed in the Muscatine County Jail and by the North Liberty Police Department.

The three new hires are certified police officers and will not have to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. They are assigned to patrol and will complete the department's field training program. He previously worked in the Muscatine County Jail and for the North Liberty Police Department.
