The Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) is alerting area residents and retailers of a recent spike in the use of counterfeit U.S. currency in the city.

Retailers are asked to test any large denominations they find suspicious. Counterfeit detector pens can be used, as well as UV counterfeit detector machines.

If a resident or retailers believe they have received a counterfeit bill, they should contact the police as soon as possible, note the time of the transaction, and get a good description/security video of the suspect.

The Joint Emergency Communications Center can also be contacted if residents wish to report counterfeit currency at 319-356-6800.

This matter currently remains under investigation by the ICPD.

Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s). CrimeStoppers tips can be submitted via the P3 Tips app, online at, or by phone at 319-358-TIPS (8477).
