Iowa City's new Police Chief will be available for coffee and a conversation at the next Coffee with a Cop event.

Coffee with a Cop will happen Friday, Jan. 27, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Bruegger's Bagels, 245 Iowa Ave., Iowa City.

Iowa City's new Police Chief Jody Matherly was sworn-in during an early morning ceremony at City Hall on Monday, January 23, 2017.

City Council members, police officers and city staff gathered inside Emma Harvat Hall for the ceremony which was conducted by Deputy City Clerk Julie Voparil​. Matherly spoke after he was sworn-in saying the department will continue to serve the Iowa City community with the utmost professionalism.

The existing pedestrian detour on Dubuque Street south of the Park Road Bridge will continue through the end of February, and possibly into early March.

Pedestrians are currently being re-routed off of Dubuque Street for work on the Iowa City Gateway Project . People will instead need to use the Park Road Bridge and connect with the Hancher Pedestrian Bridge. This detour is especially of note for University of Iowa students living in Mayflower...

Iowa City notice of annual suspension of yard waste service

The City of Iowa City will be suspending weekly route yard waste services beginning Friday, January 27 through Monday, March 13, 2017. This service adjustment is done annually in order to conserve fuel and limit expenses during late winter when there is minimal use of the service. However, yard waste service will be offered during this period by appointment only. Customers may call 319-356-5151 at least 24 hours prior to their regular collection day to request pick up service.

Historic Preservation Commission awarded National Park Service Civil Rights Grant

The Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission has been awarded a Civil Rights Grant from the National Park Service. This grant will be used to help fund the nomination of Iowa City’s Tate Arms rooming house and the Iowa Federation Home Dormitory, to the National Register of Historic Places. The $16,000 grant will also be used to produce educational material to promote their significance in the history of civil rights in Iowa.

The City of Iowa City will host the first of a series of open house events to discuss the Iowa City Bicycle Master Plan and gather input from community residents regarding local bicycling conditions.
