On Friday, August 28, 2015 at 3:52 a.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to the east side of Iowa City for a report of a vehicle that was just stolen and left a residence southbound in the 200 block of Shrader Road.  Approximately five minutes later, an Iowa City Police Officer spotted the stolen vehicle pulling into the Kum & Go at 2303 Muscatine Avenue.  The driver (Cowart) and a passenger (Walls) were immediately taken into custody and subsequently identified as:

During a search of the vehicle, Officers located several items that the victim of the stolen vehicle identified as not belonging to him.  Officers subsequently checked the property for identifying characteristics along with the area around where the vehicle was stolen and located at least four additional victims. 

There are still several items that Officers located that have not been linked back to the rightful owners and the Iowa City Police Department is asking for the public’s help, particularly in the area of Shrader Road and the 900 block of E Jefferson St.  If your vehicle or residence has been burglarized or if you’ve had property stolen from outside of your residence, please contact the Iowa City Police Department to report the crime. 

Cowart was charged with the following crimes:          

Theft in the Second Degree, a Class “D” Felony
Burglary in the Third Degree (four counts), an Aggravated Misdemeanor
Operating While Intoxicated, a Serious Misdemeanor

Walls was charged with the following crimes:

Theft in the Second Degree, a Class “D” Felony
Burglary in the Third Degree (four counts), an Aggravated Misdemeanor 

These incidents are still under investigation and additional charges against these two people are probable.

The Iowa City Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating additional witnesses, evidence, or information about this incident.  The Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is offering up to a $1000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of this suspect(s). Anyone with information about this crime is urged to contact CrimeStoppers at 358-TIPS (8477).  All calls are held in strict confidence and anonymity is guaranteed.  Individuals providing information do not have to reveal their identity to collect a reward.
