On July 20, 2015 at 4:09 a.m., while conducting an unrelated traffic stop on  Highway 218 northbound just south of the Melrose Avenue intersection, an Iowa City Police Department patrol vehicle was sideswiped by a pickup truck and trailer travelling northbound on Highway 218. The driver of the offending pick-up truck and trailer, which had a combine head on the trailer, continued northbound at a higher rate of speed was then followed with lights and sirens by an additional Iowa City Police Officer who was in the area. As the offending vehicle continued northbound on Highway 218, still refusing to stop for lights and sirens, the North Liberty Police Department was requested for assistance for the deployment of stop sticks. As the truck maintained driving northbound, the driver began to speed up considerably and began to swerve in in the roadway considerably. At this point the on duty Iowa City Police Department supervisor terminated continuation of the pursuit. However, as the truck approached North Liberty on Interstate 380 near the 4 mile marker, the driver of the truck drove at a high rate of speed directly into a North Liberty Police Department Patrol vehicle which was parked off the roadway.  It is unknown at this time if this action was intentional and remains under investigation. As the truck was now incapacitated, the driver was taken into custody and transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals by the Johnson County Ambulance Service for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. There were no injuries to any officers in this incident; however there was vehicle damage sustained by the Iowa City Police Department and North Liberty Police Department patrol vehicles respectively.

The name of the driver is not being released at this time and there are charges pending the outcome of the investigations into this matter. The Iowa City Police Department continues to investigate the level of intoxication and impairment of the driver, while the Iowa State Patrol is conducting the investigation into the two separate collisions into the patrol vehicles. The Iowa City Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the North Liberty Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol and the Johnson County Ambulance Service.
