Ped Mall update: Library's west entrance doors to reopen

During the week of July 29, 2019, crew members for the Ped Mall Improvements Project continued installing pavers from the playground to the Iowa City Public Library’ west entrance.

Crews plan to place PCC sub slab from the west Library entrance to Linn Street by the end of this week (Friday, Aug. 9). This will allow the west entrance into the Pedestrian Mall to reopen.

County emergency training exercise to take place at Wellness Center on Aug. 13

Area first responders and local hospitals are participating in a Johnson County Emergency Management training exercise at the University of Iowa Campus Wellness and Recreation Center (CRWC) at approximately 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019.

The event, centered around the Wellness Center at 309 S. Madison St., is an exercise to help train multiple jurisdictions on how to best respond to an incident involving an armed assailant, and is not a real emergency.

The area will be clearly marked for the public. The following roads, sidewalks, and parking lots will be temporarily closed...

Stop by one of the six parties being hosted in Iowa City to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019.

This is part of a nationwide effort to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, build partnerships between neighborhoods and the Police Department, and send a message that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.

Several neighborhoods are hosting kid friendly block parties with food, games, music, and special appearances by Herky the Hawkeye and McGruff the Crime Dog.

Public meeting on proposed buffered bike lanes on Dodge, Governor to be held Wednesday, Aug. 7

The City of Iowa City is considering the addition of a buffered bike lane to both Dodge Street and Governor Street as part of the Asphalt Resurfacing 2019 Project.

These bicycle lanes have been identified as a recommended improvement by the Iowa City Bicycle Master Plan. However, on-street parking will have to be removed to accommodate the new bike lanes. The bike lanes would be added between Burlington Street and Bowery Street.

A public open house will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019 to discuss the Asphalt Resurfacing 2019 Project, and the proposed bicycle facilities....

Weather permitting, beginning Monday, August 5, 2019, West Benton Street between South Capitol Street and South Riverside Drive will be reduced to one lane of traffic in the west bound direction.

The lane reduction is necessary to facilitate pavement repairs. It is anticipated the work will be completed by Friday, August 16, 2019.

Motorists are to take note of this construction and to seek another route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

The City has announced road closures for Summer of the Arts' Soul and Blues Festival, which takes place Downtown on Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019.

Iowa Avenue between Linn Street and Dubuque Street will be closed to traffic and parking beginning at 8 a.m. Friday. Linn Street from Iowa Avenue to the alley north of The Senior Center will also be closed.

Roads and parking should reopen on Sunday, Aug. 4.
