Police Chief Jody Matherly issued awards to two officers and a civilian employee during a ceremony held Monday, March 29, 2017 at City Hall. The ICPD presents three awards annually to recognize employees for their accomplishments during the previous year.

For 2016, Officer Andrew McKnight received the Dick Lee Award, Administrative Coordinator Jenn Dahm received the Civilian Employee of the Year Award, and Officer Dennis Kelly was named Officer of the Year.

Richard Lee Award

The Richard “Dick” Lee award was established in 1999 by several retired ICPD officers to honor the life work of Captain Dick Lee, who served as an Iowa City Police Officer for 32 years. The annual award is presented to an officer in recognition of outstanding sustained efforts over the last year which positively impacted the community through a program or activity. 

Officer Andrew McKnight works as a Crisis Intervention Trained officer and on the Evening Watch. He received this award for providing consistent, high-level service to the residents of Iowa City, his willingness to help his fellow officers, and his commitment to doing his best for the Department and the community.

Civilian Employee of the Year

The Civilian Employee of the Year award was created in 2013 by retired Community Service Officer Lynda Ambrose to recognize the efforts and contributions of non-sworn personnel who are critical to maintaining the success and mission of the department on a daily basis. 

Jenn Dahm is the department’s administrative coordinator. Her expertise on payroll and accounting software, as well as tracking grants and understanding federal and state employment laws is invaluable. She always offers assistance and volunteers to take on extra tasks when she can. Her hard work and positive attitude are a positive force within the department.

The Officer of the Year Award is presented annually to the officer who most significantly demonstrates work and behavioral ethics that mirror the Iowa City Police Department’s oath of honor, and exemplify a positive image of the Iowa City Police Department as well as the community.

Officer Dennis Kelly serves on the Evening Watch and is an expert in special tactics and negotiations. He received this award for his continued perseverance, dedication, and his ability to perform his duties with professionalism, compassion, and valuable insight. Officer Kelly continuously delivers a high level of service to the community and department. Officer Kelly also received a Commendation of Distinguished Service in 2012.
