Halloween is just around the corner, and the City has plenty of spooky fun for the entire family to enjoy! The City’s official Halloween trick-or-treat hours set for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2022. Below are activities being held by our various departments:

Transit Notice: 5-Lower Muscatine detour announced for Oct. 4-Oct. 16

Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022, the 5-Lower Muscatine/Kirkwood bus will be detoured due to road work on the east side of Fairmeadows Boulevard, south of Highway 6.

Outbound buses will continue on the normal route.

Inbound buses will service The Quarters using the Frontage Road as usual, but will then detour to Hollywood Boulevard. Buses will continue to Sycamore Street, Highway 6, and South First Avenue then left back onto Lower Muscatine Road. The City of Iowa City is seeking applicants to fill three vacancies on the Human Rights Commission. Each vacancy is a full term that starts on Jan. 1, 2023, and runs through Dec. 31, 2025. Service is on a volunteer basis. The Human Rights Commission meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall, 410 E. Washington St.

The duties of the Commission involve:

Disseminating information to educate the public on illegal discrimination and civil rights Planning programs and activities designed to eliminate racial, religious, cultural and other intergroup tensions...

Intersection of First and Scott to be closed starting Oct. 6; detours announced

To complete the First Avenue and Scott Boulevard Intersection Improvements project, the intersection will be closed beginning Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022. This closure is dependent on weather.

The new roundabout in the area will be open once the closure is finished. Depending on weather, the intersection should reopen Friday, Oct. 21, 2022.

During the closure, a detour route will be posted and includes North Dodge Street, North Governor Street, Burlington Street, Muscatine Avenue, Court Street, and First Avenue.

Traffic Alert – Benton Street

Weather permitting, traffic on the following street will be impacted beginning Monday, Oct. 3, 2022:

Benton Street will be closed at its intersection with Giblin Drive. Access to Giblin Drive will be maintained at all times. A detour route including Riverside Drive, Highway 1, and Sunset Street will be posted.

This traffic impact will facilitate work associated with the 2022 Water Pavement Patching Project. It is anticipated normal traffic will resume by the end of the day Friday, Oct. 14.

City receives award for excellence in financial reporting for 37th consecutive year

For the 37th consecutive year, the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Iowa City for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, or Annual Report, for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2021.

The Government Finance Officers Association, or GFOA, awarded the Certificate of Achievement, the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting for “significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”

The City's Parking Division will be switching its parking mobile payment app to ParkMobile in October. Converted meters will be clearly marked with the ParkMobile logo.

The switch from Passport Parking to ParkMobile comes after the University of Iowa switched to ParkMobile earlier in the year. Soon, all mobile parking payments in town will be handled exclusively through the app.
