On Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 9:04 a.m., the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center (JECC) received a 911 call reporting a bank robbery in progress at the US Bank located at 1117 William Street in Iowa City. The witness observing the incident reported seeing a male subject with a gun in the act of committing a robbery at the bank. The witness further reported that the subject, wearing all black with a bag in his hand, was leaving the area of the bank. At this time, a University of Iowa Department of Public Safety (UIDPS) Police Officer was in the area assisting the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) on another matter. The UIDPS made contact with the subject matching the description provided by the witness. Upon making contact with the subject, a fake (plastic) gun was located. Video and eye witness identification into the matter determined that the subject located was the person who committed the robbery of the bank.

After further investigation, Clifton Rayner Brinkmeyer, DOB 10-14-1985, of 739 Perry Court in Iowa City, was transported to the Johnson County Jail without incident and charged with the crime of Robbery in the Second Degree (Class C Felony).

The ICPD was assisted in this investigation by the UIDPS and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). This matter remains under investigation by the ICPD Investigations division.

As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. For more information, contact Sergeant Scott Gaarde at 319-356-5293 or scott-gaarde@iowa-city.org.
