The Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) recognized two officers and one civilian employee for their accomplishments in 2015 at a reception in Emma J. Harvat Hall on Monday, Feb. 22. Matt Wagner received the Civilian Officer of the Year award, Officer Rob Cash received the Richard “Dick” Lee award, and Officer Dave Gonzalez received the Officer of the Year award.
Civilian Employee of the Year award
The ICPD Civilian Employee of the Year award was created in 2013 by retired Community Service Officer Lynda Ambrose to recognize the efforts and contributions of non-sworn personnel who are critical to maintaining the success and mission of the ICPD on a daily basis.
The 2015 Civilian Employee of the Year award was presented to Matt Wagner for his positive attitude and consistent and superior service to community members and the City. Wagner was nominated for his patience, hard work, excellent communication skills and his ability to foster an enjoyable work environment for everyone around him.
Richard “Dick” Lee award
The Richard “Dick” Lee award was established in 1999 by several retired ICPD officers to honor the life work of Captain Dick Lee, who served as an Iowa City Police Officer for 32 years. The annual award is presented to an officer in recognition of outstanding sustained efforts over the last year which positively impacted the community through a program or activity.
The 2015 Richard “Dick” Lee award was presented to Officer Rob Cash. Officer Cash was nominated for the award because of his ability to foster several new partnerships within the community over the last year, helping the ICPD to strengthen its core mission of customer service. Additionally, his commitment to the ICPD, coupled with his strong work ethic, flexibility and professionalism, is a positive example of an officer balancing the many demands of today’s ever changing law enforcement culture.
Officer of the Year award
The Officer of the Year award is presented on an annual basis to the officer who most significantly demonstrates work and behavioral ethics that mirror the ICPD’s oath of honor and exemplifies a positive image of the Department as well as the community.
The 2015 Iowa City Police Officer of the Year award was presented to Officer Dave Gonzalez. Officer Gonzalez was nominated for the award because of leadership within the ICPD. As one of the ICPD’s most veteran investigators, he completed his minimum rotation in Patrol over the past year and took it upon himself to become a part of the Late Night Watch to mentor the younger officers on the watch. Throughout the year, he has continued to learn and enhance his Patrol duties, ensure he is working cases thoroughly and advocate for victims.
