On Monday March 7, Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) Chief Sam Hargadine swore in Mark Schaapveld as a Police Officer during a ceremony in Emma J. Harvat Hall.

Officer Schaapveld, 30, originally from Iowa City, is 2004 graduate of Iowa City West High School and graduated from the University of Iowa in 2009 with a B.A. in management and marketing. Prior to employment with the ICPD, Schaapveld was employed at the University of Iowa Police Department as a patrol officer since June 2009.  Schaapveld graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy class #230 in December 2009.  He is a certified firearms, defensive tactics, and R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) instructor.

Prior to a permanent assignment, Schaapveld will participate in the ICPD’s 14-week field training program. He has been assigned badge #39.
