Tobacco sales law compliance checks were conducted from December 5-14, 2016 at the 54 businesses in Iowa City licensed to sell tobacco, alternative nicotine, and/or vapor products. Working with plainclothes officers, underage persons entered these businesses and attempted to illegally purchase tobacco products. 45 businesses appropriately refused to sell to the underage buyers. There were nine businesses that did sell tobacco products to the underage buyers.
On June 14, 2017, the nine businesses that had previously failed the tobacco compliance checks were rechecked in accordance with the Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD). Out of those businesses, two of them again failed the compliance check. Those businesses were:
- Casey’s General Store – 1904 Broadway St.
- Joe’s Place – 115 Iowa Ave.
Selling (employee) tobacco to persons under age 18 years of age is a simple misdemeanor, punishable with a $195 fine for the first offense. Selling tobacco without a license is also a simple misdemeanor. Additionally, the violations may result in civil penalties against the tobacco licenses.
