Donation Drive-Thru Event Reduces Waste During Move-out Season

The City's Donation Drive-Thru was the one-day donation and recycling event on Sunday, July 24, 2022, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Chauncey Swan parking ramp.

In a span of four hours, over four tons (approximately 8,246 pounds) of materials were saved from the landfill and diverted through recycling and donation programs. Below is a recap of materials diverted at the event with estimated weights.

Applications are being accepted for a vacancy on the Iowa City Human Rights Commission for an unexpired term. The vacancy starts upon appointment and ends on December 31, 2024. Service is on a volunteer basis.

Duties of the Commission involve educating the public on civil and human rights, including planning programs and activities to eliminate unlawful discrimination. The Commission also makes recommendations to the City Council for the Racial Equity and Social Justice Grant funding, as well as for additional local legislation relating to unlawful discrimination. Effective Friday, Aug. 19, 2022, the 11-Rochester route will detour inbound and outbound due to road work closing Rochester Avenue between Montrose Avenue and Windsor Drive. The Rochester route will use Jefferson Street to Glendale Road to Ashwood Drive for inbound and outbound travel. The work is expected to be ongoing through November 2022.

Prevent landfill fires by properly disposing of batteries and battery-containing items like cell phones, wristwatches, or Bluetooth speakers via City drop-off recycling programs.

When a battery ends up in the trash and eventually makes its way to the landfill, heavy equipment that compacts trash can damage the battery. A damaged battery can spark and ignite a fire or release hazardous material into the landfill or environment.

Residents of Johnson County and the cities of Kalona and Riverside can recycle single-use (such as alkaline) and rechargeable (such as lithium-ion)...

Weather pending, the initial road closure for the Rochester Avenue Reconstruction Project is set to begin Friday, Aug. 19, 2022.

The project will Rochester from Ralston Creek to Windsor Drive beginning Aug. 19, as part of Stage 1 of the project. Work in that area is slated to last through Nov. 2022, with the road reopening for the winter season.
