The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating Arbor Day with several tree plantings over the next two weeks. The Forestry Division's Arbor Day Program has supported community plantings for 41 years by partnering with local organizations to educate on the benefits of planting trees while offering a hands-on experience of tree planting.

2021 Arbor Day tree plantings include
  • Big Grove, Green State Credit Union, and Trees Forever planting near Riverfront Crossings Park
    • Thursday, April 22, 2021
  • Iowa City area Rotary planting at Court Hill Park
    • Saturday, April 24, 2021
  • University of Iowa National Residence Hall Honorary planting in the Normandy Neighborhood
    • Saturday, April 24, 2021
  • Willowwind School Planting
    • Friday, April 30, 2021

In addition to the Arbor Day plantings, staff has started spring tree plantings in city parks and along right-of-ways (ROWs). The ROW is the strip between the sidewalk and the street.

Planting trees in Iowa City helps diversify the city's urban tree canopy, supports our Tree City USA status, and also supports Iowa City's Climate Action Goals, which provide a variety of benefits to residents.
