Public meeting on proposed buffered bike lanes on Dodge, Governor to be held Wednesday, Aug. 7

The City of Iowa City is considering the addition of a buffered bike lane to both Dodge Street and Governor Street as part of the Asphalt Resurfacing 2019 Project.

These bicycle lanes have been identified as a recommended improvement by the Iowa City Bicycle Master Plan. However, on-street parking will have to be removed to accommodate the new bike lanes. The bike lanes would be added between Burlington Street and Bowery Street.

A public open house will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019 to discuss the Asphalt Resurfacing 2019 Project, and the proposed bicycle facilities....

Benton Street lane reduction begins Monday

Weather permitting, beginning Monday, August 5, 2019, West Benton Street between South Capitol Street and South Riverside Drive will be reduced to one lane of traffic in the west bound direction.

The lane reduction is necessary to facilitate pavement repairs. It is anticipated the work will be completed by Friday, August 16, 2019.

Motorists are to take note of this construction and to seek another route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

The City has announced road closures for Summer of the Arts' Soul and Blues Festival, which takes place Downtown on Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019.

Iowa Avenue between Linn Street and Dubuque Street will be closed to traffic and parking beginning at 8 a.m. Friday. Linn Street from Iowa Avenue to the alley north of The Senior Center will also be closed.

Roads and parking should reopen on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Effective today, Tuesday, July 30, 2019, Court Street is closed from First Avenue to Upland Avenue to facilitate installation of water main. A detour is posted and access to residences in the area will be maintained. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by Friday, Aug. 16, 2019.

Iowa City Police Officer and shoplifting suspect injured during officer-involved shooting incident

On Monday, July 29, 2019, at approximately 3:29 p.m., officers with the Iowa City Police Department responded to a shoplifting complaint at a business located at 11 Highway 1 West.

A suspect was located in a nearby area, away from the business. As the investigation was unfolding, an Iowa City Police Officer was shot multiple times with a weapon and received injuries to his face. The weapon was later identified as a BB gun. The officer also fired his weapon, striking the suspect. The officer and suspect were each transported to a local hospital and are in stable condition.

Parking will be banned on a stretch of East College Street on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, and Thursday, Aug. 1, to allow for pothole repair and street sweeping.

East College from South Van Buren Street to Muscatine Avenue will be closed to parking starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday. Any cars still parked on the north side of the street will be towed at that time. Cars parked on the south side of the road will be towed starting at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Temporary "no parking" signs will go up in the area Monday, July 29, 2019.
