On December 7th, 2015 the Iowa City Fire Department was summoned to three separate building fires. At 8:30 a.m. ICFD personnel were dispatched to 18 Commercial Drive for a fire in a commercial building. Firefighters arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the roof of Streb Concrete. Fire crews cut the roof and walls to access and extinguish the fire.
At 9:21 p.m. firefighters were summoned to Beta Theta Pi fraternity at 816 N. Dubuque. The ICFD arrived quickly to find a fire in a third floor bedroom. Firefighters contained and extinguished the fire quickly, limiting damage to the single room. One person was displaced as a result of the fire.
While completing operations at 816 N. Dubuque, the ICFD was notified of a building fire at 630 S. Capitol Street. Fire units responded from Beta Theta Pi to 630 S. Capitol, arriving at 10:14 p.m. The first firefighters on the scene found a fire burning in a dumpster enclosure in the building's interior. Firefighting efforts were complicated by fire that extended throughout the refuse chute, which traversed all five stories of the building. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in an hour. No residents of the apartment building were displaced by the fire.
Six ICFD units and 18 firefighters worked to mitigate the three fires. No injuries were sustained at the incidents. No damage estimates are available and the cause of the three building fires remains under investigation by the office of the Iowa City Fire Marshal.
