At 2:16 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, the Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD) responded to a structure fire at the Center for Disabilities and Development at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC).

The first unit to arrive found smoke visible in a top floor hallway. Fire crews found the fire to be primarily located in the insulation just below the roof membrane. A construction crew was in the process of performing hot work to repair various sections of the roof at the time of the fire. All occupants were out of the building at the time of arrival.

Thirteen ICFD personnel assisted with fire suppression efforts. Members of the UIHC Safety and Security staff, along with the Johnson County Ambulance Service, assisted at the scene. Fire crews were on scene for approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

The structure, valued at $46 million, sustained approximately $30,000 in damages. The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental.
