At 1:49 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9, the Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD) responded to a structure fire at 1984 Mackinaw Drive.

The first arriving unit found smoke coming from the roof of the home. Fire crews found the fire to be located in the attic space. The occupants believed that there had been a lightning strike in the area earlier that morning. Smoke in the attic was noticed by passersby in the afternoon and all occupants were able to exit the home safely prior to ICFD arrival.

Fourteen ICFD personnel assisted with fire suppression efforts. Johnson County Ambulance Service, the Iowa City Police Department, MidAmerican Energy and the Red Cross assisted at the scene. Fire crews were on scene for approximately two hours.

The structure, valued at $225,000, sustained approximately $25,000 in damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the ICFD Fire Marshal’s office.
